Psicologia del Luogo (Psychology of Place)

All “ecopsychology” is a PSYCHOLOGY OF PLACE. [...]

We all enter “Nature,” a vague, vast, ambiguous, and abstract space (space, also an abstraction) through a PLACE: a hole, a path, a meadow, a river. A whole mountain is too big to embrace. Rather we move through mountains by placing actual feet, touching ground, every step a location, every step a place.
We make love in this tuff of grass. [...]
I cannot “connect with Nature,” that’s too big and esoteric for me. I touch THIS ROCK, kiss you in THIS MEADOW, right on top of THE VERDANT, WET GRASS where the ants gallivant about for morsels of food. We can be their food.

I cannot “connect with forest,” that’s too vast for me. I embrace THIS tree and pick its fruit and eat it HERE, my mouth dripping sweet with juices that stay in THIS PLACE.

“Planet” is way, way too big! I sit here, on top of this small rock. I see stars, I feel small but fast and secure.

I-Thou THIS PLACE, concretely, objectively, all feelings and all stomach and all eyes and all ears and all skin—HERE AND NOW.
